Team History & Trivia
History
Dutch sports car manufacturer Spyker Cars acquired the struggling Midland F1 Racing team, itself a continuation of the Jordan lineage, for $106.6 million in September 2006, switching the livery to orange and silver in a nod to the Netherlands' national racing colour and rebranding the team Spyker F1 for the 2007 season, run under a Dutch racing licence with Ferrari engines. Facing severe financial strain, including releasing driver Christijan Albers mid-season due to a sponsorship shortfall, the team was sold after just a single season to Indian businessman Vijay Mallya and entrepreneur Michiel Mol, becoming Force India for 2008.
Notable Achievements
Spyker's sole season produced just one championship point, scored by Adrian Sutil, who finished eighth at the 2007 Japanese Grand Prix after a post-race penalty applied to a Toro Rosso driver promoted him up the order. The team's most memorable on-track moment came when Markus Winkelhock briefly led the 2007 European Grand Prix thanks to a well-timed tyre strategy in changeable conditions, the only time a Spyker driver led a Grand Prix.
Notable People
The team's driver line-up in its single season included Adrian Sutil, Christijan Albers, and later Markus Winkelhock and Sakon Yamamoto, after Albers was released mid-season amid the team's funding troubles. Spyker's ownership passed from the Midland-era management to the Spyker Cars leadership before Vijay Mallya and Michiel Mol took over at season's end.
Fun Facts
Spyker's single 2007 season, though ultimately a financial struggle, produced the improbable spectacle of Markus Winkelhock leading a Grand Prix in only his second F1 start, a fleeting highlight for a team that otherwise scored just one championship point in its brief 17-race history before selling on to become Force India.
