History

Lawrence Stroll's investment consortium purchased the assets of the collapsed Force India team in 2018 and renamed the operation Racing Point for the 2019 season, continuing to race from the team's long-standing Silverstone base under a British licence. The team lasted only two seasons under this name before Stroll's acquisition of a stake in Aston Martin Lagonda prompted a further rebrand to Aston Martin F1 Team for the 2021 season.

Notable Achievements

Racing Point's best season was 2020, when it finished fourth in the constructors' championship with 195 points (after a 15-point penalty), and the team achieved its first pole position, with Lance Stroll qualifying on top at the Turkish Grand Prix. Sergio Pérez delivered the team's first and only victory as Racing Point at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, ending a 17-year drought since the same chassis lineage, dating back to Jordan, had last won a race in 2003.

Notable People

Otmar Szafnauer served as team principal throughout Racing Point's two seasons, with Sergio Pérez and Lance Stroll as the regular race drivers; Nico Hülkenberg stepped in as a substitute during 2020 when both regular drivers tested positive for COVID-19.

Fun Facts

Racing Point's 2020 car, the RP20, sparked a major controversy during pre-season testing due to its close visual resemblance to the previous year's championship-winning Mercedes W10; following a formal protest from Renault, the FIA investigated the team's brake ducts and ultimately fined Racing Point €400,000 and docked 15 constructors' points, and the car was widely nicknamed the 'pink Mercedes' as a result.
